Aid agencies lost access to Wad Madani, a former aid hub in the important El Gezira agricultural region southeast of Khartoum, after the RSF seized it from the army last month. Diplomats and aid workers say that the army and officials aligned with it have hampered humanitarian access as both sides pursue their military campaigns. To so many Sudanese, though, they are instantly recognisable as the words of the people’s poet: Mahjoub Sharif. The photograph tells us nothing about whether or how these children are related. Hundreds of Israeli hostages, including children, are believed to be held in Gaza by Hamas, their families desperate for their safe release. It is a rare thing for mainstream news organizations to publish graphic images of dead or wounded children. There is nothing quite so devastating as the image of a child whose life has been snuffed out by senseless violence. And so the slaughter in Maine reminded me of another image from Gaza, one you may have seen on social media.

Fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on April 15 over tensions linked to a planned transition to civilian rule. It has devastated the capital Khartoum and sparked ethnically driven attacks in Darfur. The RSF quickly controlled the capital and residents have accused it of looting and occupying homes. The army, which has maintained control of its bases, has launched major airstrikes and artillery fire. Within Khartoum, the RSF has launched attacks on several army bases, including the main army headquarters and the armoured corps base.

Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, visited the hospital, in Adre, Chad, on the border with Sudan, September 6, 2023. The federal health ministry said in a statement late on Tuesday that 18 people had died and 265 infected with cholera in al-Qadarif state. A doctors' syndicate in Sudan said 3,398 cases of dengue fever were recorded across al-Qadarif, Red Sea, North Kordofan and Khartoum states between mid-April and mid-September. Last week the United Nations said more than 1,200 children had died of suspected measles and malnutrition in refugee camps in Sudan's White Nile state, and that cholera, dengue fever and malaria posed a risk across the country. Dengue fever is endemic in Sudan.
